Trip description
Embark on an unforgettable trekking adventure to the summit of Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa at 4,167 meters. Starting from Imlil, hike through traditional Berber villages, terraced fields, and stunning mountain landscapes of the High Atlas. Spend the night at the mountain refuge before attempting the summit.
On the second day, enjoy an early ascent to the top of Mount Toubkal, where breathtaking panoramic views reward your effort. Descend through spectacular valleys and authentic mountain scenery before returning to Marrakech. This trek is ideal for nature lovers and adventure seekers with a good level of physical fitness.
Tour itinerary
Depart Marrakech and drive to Imlil, located about 70 km away. Upon arrival, meet the muleteers, load the luggage, and begin the trek. Pass through the village of Aremd (1,900 m), just 15 minutes from Imlil, before continuing towards Sidi Chamharouch. Along the way, discover charming Berber villages, terraced fields, and traditional irrigation channels. Picnic lunch en route. Overnight stay at the Toubkal Refuge (Neltner Refuge).
The ascent of the highest peak in the Maghreb, Mount Toubkal, is achievable without major technical difficulties. A rocky trail begins near the refuge, crossing scree slopes and a narrow valley scattered with large boulders. The final ridge is broad and gradually levels out as you approach the summit, which overlooks the impressive cliffs descending towards Lake Ifni on the opposite side. A picnic lunch will be enjoyed along the way.
The descent takes you from the rugged alpine landscape down into fertile irrigated valleys, passing through Sidi Chamharouch and the cultivated terraces of Aremd. The trek ends in Imlil, where your minibus awaits to transfer you back to Marrakech. Along the route, you may also stop at small mineral stalls displaying local treasures from the pre-Saharan mountains, including amethyst, galena, and gypsum.
